Permissiveness and conceptual incongruity in Blaxploitation films concerning the shaping and portrayal of the female character exemplified in the works of Pam Grier. A new step for the Hollywood film industry from 1968 till nowadays is the creation of the MPAA film rating system. Ever since the erasure of the production code of the Classic Hollywood era, and filmmakersââ¬â¢ realisation that they do not need the seal of approval, it has become possible to show or tell anything on screen. Film genres like horror for examples thrived as they tested the new limits of the horror experience. The end of Classic Hollywood and the production code also marked the beginning of new film movements inside New Hollywood. Genres like porno chics and trendsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To illustrate this aspect of newness in New Hollywood I will be analysing two of the works of Pam Grier - Foxy Brown (Jack Hill, 1974) and Sheba, Baby (William Girdler, 1975). The American Civil Rights movement included protests and civil disobedience supporting the cause of stopping the racial segregation and discrimination of African-Americans. The protesters aimed to protect the legal and federal rights of people of colour in the USA. The NAACP who were on the first front of the fight for rights were also focusing of the portrayal of blacks on screen which was very limited to the old production code developed stereotypes. Representation of black people in the film industry was an important issue and it was with regards to the presence of African-American people on and off screen. The NAACP were fighting for the right of black talents to express themselves and find jobs in the creative film industry. They wanted ââ¬Å"accurateâ⬠portrayal of the lives of these people on screen, that do not revolve around stereotypes and portray authentic traits of the regular African-American. In the book Soul Search Christopher Sieving (2011) talks about the strug gle to find this authenticity as well as prospects and push for this so called ââ¬Å"authenticâ⬠black cinema that could emerge from the major studio network and the career opportunities for black people.
